When purchasing a digital camera, generally go with a Nikon or a Canon as they are the best in the industry. As for point and shoot, the Canons seem to have a better focussing system although they tend to be more expensive than the Nikons. Nikons are generally less expensive than Canons and they do offer good functionality and features.
In the 300-400 price range, the cameras to look for are: Nikon P80 and the one is the Canon Powershot SX10. These are both 10MP cameras and both offer good features. However the Canon tends to be a little bigger than the Nikon but both offer some SLR features that makes these cameras great buys.
