One of the major problems with connections is that either the Firefox program or the preferences files may be corrupt. Either way, it requires to either re-install Firefox or remove the Firefox preferences.
To re-install Firefox simply go to the mozilla web site (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/) to download the browser and after the download is complete, remove the old copy of Firefox and reinstall the new one you just downloaded.
First shut down Firefox to do this and then simply go to the Users -> -> Library -> Preferences and look for the 2 following files:
